Manager Watch

Prime Quadrant, the flat-fee MFO.

Manager Watch: Toronto multi-family office, ~CAD $23B in client assets, the Four-Quadrant Framework.

Prime Quadrant is a Toronto-headquartered multi-family office serving roughly 225 ultra-high-net-worth families, with approximately CAD $23 billion (USD $16.2 billion) in Assets Under Consultation as of Q3 2024. The operating posture is unusually clean for the MFO category: flat-fee compensation, no proprietary products, retainer-based engagement, and a proprietary Four-Quadrant Framework that organises the practice around capital, person, family, and impact. This primer is the structural read.

The Manager Watch column opens its multi-family-office coverage with Prime Quadrant. Prime Quadrant is the natural first MFO profile for the publication: Canadian, Toronto-headquartered, fully independent from bank or asset-manager affiliations, flat-fee compensation, and a published operating-model framework that is concrete enough to read against. This primer is the structural read.

What it is, on the record.

Prime Quadrant’s homepage frames the firm plainly: “Prime Quadrant was founded on a simple conviction: that brilliant wealth management is the foundation, not the finish line. We work with ultra-high-net-worth families who refuse to settle on their capital, their relationships, their legacy, and themselves.”[1]

The published Assets Under Consultation figure on the homepage is dated September 30, 2024.[1] The Citywire report that ran in late 2024 on Prime Quadrant’s exit from the Focus Financial partnership puts the AUC at approximately USD $16.2 billion (CAD $23 billion) for about 225 ultra-wealthy families as of the same window.[2] These are the most recent publicly-cited numbers.

The publication uses Citywire’s reporting for the specific AUC figure because the homepage extract did not capture the exact dollar amount. A follow-up Manager Watch piece will pull Prime Quadrant’s own most recent Q3 2024 disclosure or the F2025 AUC figure when published.

AUC vs AUM, as the firm frames it.

Prime Quadrant uses “Assets Under Consultation™” (AUC) as its primary measurement, not discretionary AUM. The firm’s published framing:[1]

This figure represents Assets Under Consultation™ (AUC) as of 9/30/2024 for Prime Quadrant, which is a different standard of measurement than discretionary Assets Under Management (AUM). We believe AUC fairly represents our comprehensive service model. We provide strategic consulting solutions across our client families’ entire universe of assets, regardless of the nature of those assets, how they were sourced or where they are custodied.

This is the operationally honest framing for an MFO that consults across an entire family balance sheet rather than discretionarily managing a slice of it. AUM-based peer comparisons are misleading for Prime Quadrant’s actual service model.

The Four-Quadrant Framework.

The firm’s proprietary methodology organises the practice around four named domains:[1]

QuadrantOperating focus
Capital”Managing money with discipline, alignment, and expanded solutions”
Family”Capable stewards, clear governance, and shared language across generations”
Impact”Directing capital toward the causes, communities, and changes you want to see”
PersonThe behavioural and personal-development dimension

The framework is what differentiates Prime Quadrant from a peer that treats the engagement as money-management with bolted-on family-office services. The MFO category is crowded with firms whose actual operational depth varies; the published Four-Quadrant structure makes Prime Quadrant’s claim about depth checkable against client experience over time.

Compensation and conflict-free framing.

Three of the firm’s published operating claims matter for an FO/UHNW reader assessing the engagement model:[1]

Flat-fee, client-paid. “Our compensation comes from our clients, primarily on a flat-fee basis. Nothing else shapes the advice we give.”

No proprietary products. “We build nothing of our own, which leaves us free to source the best opportunities anywhere in the world. Our advice follows the opportunity, never the inventory.”

Small practice intentionally. “The families we serve expect wealth management that meets the weight of what they’ve built. We keep the practice small so it always does.”

The combination of these three is genuinely unusual in the Canadian MFO landscape. Many peer firms operate on AUM-percentage fee schedules and maintain proprietary product lineups. Prime Quadrant’s posture is a deliberate operational choice with structural consequences for advice quality.

The 2024 Focus Financial exit.

Citywire reported in late 2024 that Prime Quadrant exited its partnership with Focus Financial Partners.[2] Focus Financial, a US-based RIA aggregator, had been a partner of Prime Quadrant; the exit returned Prime Quadrant to fully independent ownership. This is the most recent material structural change at the firm and is consistent with the firm’s “no conflicts, no distractions” published posture.

Named team members.

The homepage surfaces these contributors via their bylines on the firm’s blog:[1]

A full leadership and team page on the firm’s site would surface more named professionals; the homepage extract is the entry point.

Community-facing event.

“An annual event bringing together 400+ investors in support of pediatric care and mental health.”[1]

The community-focused event format is consistent with the firm’s published framing about “impact” as one of the four quadrants.

What this column tracks from here on Prime Quadrant.

Three watch items.

  1. The F2025 AUC figure when published. The September 30, 2024 AUC anchor is the most recent published number; the F2025 number will reveal AUC growth or shrinkage over a year that included the Focus exit and the 2025 market environment.
  2. The firm’s published research and writing. The homepage blog surfaces 8-10 active contributors; the editorial output is itself a signal of the firm’s intellectual posture. Follow-up Manager Watch pieces will read individual articles.
  3. The Annual Event impact metrics. The 400+ investor gathering is a Toronto-anchored UHNW community event with named philanthropic beneficiaries (pediatric care, mental health). Tracking the beneficiaries and the cumulative philanthropic outcomes is the “Impact” quadrant in action.
